Elliott Business Software Version 8 introduces a new and more efficient way in which help contents are retrieved and displayed.  In previous versions of Elliott, the help contents were retrieved and displayed locally.  This method posed several problems: (1) When we updated the help contents, users had to download updates in order to see the new contents; (2) The technique we chose to display the help content is not compatible with Windows 7.

Because of that, we began searching for a better way to display help contents when we designed our ERP software, Elliott V8.  As a result, all help contents are now displayed through a Web browser in Elliott V8.  The help contents are centrally located and reside on Netcellent’s Web server.  This means we can provide our customers with up-to-date contents as soon as we finish the new documentation.  In addition, as long as you can access the www.elliott.com website in a browser, you will be able to access the Elliott help contents.  Currently, we are investing major resources to update the Elliott V8 documentation. This is another reason you should consider upgrading to Elliott V8.

Elliott Business Software is a cost-effective ERP solution that is affordable for any small- to medium-size business. It is perfect for general accounting, wholesale distribution and manufacturing. It also has excellent capabilities that assist the import export business and petroleum marketers/fuel distributors.  It provides advance serial number tracking, which is ideal for many companies, as well as many other features.

There have been significant system changes in Elliott Version 8.  One of the changes is the improvement to printing and archiving reports.  Version 8 supports multiple report destinations.  You can specify any combinations of simultaneous outputs:  printer, screen, disk, defer, or email.  There is a new tabbed dialog interface for the report output options window.

The deferred reports feature has also been improved.  You have the option to specify an email to be sent with the report attached when done.  It also offers a run now option, which spools to disk immediately as background task.  The process runs on deferred reports machine for fastest throughput.  This frees the user to continue working while the report is processing.  There is an optional user email notification when the report is done.

Elliott Version 8 will soon in be in general release.  We highly recommend you give Version 8 a test drive.

Elliott Version 8 introduces a new and convenient way of handling drill-down screens.  For example, in the Stock Status Inquiry screen you can hold down the Control key and press the appropriate function key for ATP Inquiry and the ATP data will open in a separate process window.  This will allow you to open as many drill-down screens as you wish and make it easier for side-by-side comparisons.

From the ATP Inquiry screen you can further drill down to the Sales Order, Purchase Order or Work Order Inquiry screens.  From the Work Order Inquiry screen you can drill down to the Stock Status Inquiry for the components, which was not available in previous version due to a recursive limitation.  Notes, Attributes, and eContacts also support the new drill-down screens in Elliott Version 8.

If you are interested in participating in the Elliott Version 8 beta release, let us know and we can help you install it on your system.  Running Elliott Version 8 has minimal risk and several sizable Elliott users have already converted to Version 8.  You can call us at 909-598-9019 or email us at sales@netcellent.com.

You will love the new Report Viewer in Elliott V8.

Elliott 7 uses Notepad to view reports printed to the screen.  If you choose to print a hard copy from Notepad, the format is often printed incorrectly.  Emailing the report or saving it as a Spooled Report can be difficult.  As a result, most find it easier to print the same report again from Elliott to the final destination.

Version 8 will now give you the option to view a report printed to the screen using the new Report Viewer.  Unlike Notepad, the new Report Viewer is optimized for Elliott report viewing.  Report Viewer can print a hard copy in the right format of the report viewed.  The report can be saved as a Spooled Report if you decide to keep it permanently.  You can also email the report directly from the Report Viewer.

The following is a list of Report Viewer highlights:

  • Choose your favorite fonts to display
  • Enlarge or shrink the Report Viewer window with the font size automatically adjusted
  • An easily accessible search function
  • Copy and paste in traditional mode or block mode
  • Fine control of paging
  • Print to the printer in the correct format
  • Save directly to Spooled Reports
  • Email reports

If you are interested in participating in the Elliott Version 8 beta release, let us know and we can help you install it on your system.  Running Elliott Version 8 has minimum risk and several sizable Elliott users have already converted to Elliott Version 8.  You can call us at 909-598-9019 or email us at sales@netcellent.com.

The most significant change in Elliott Version 8 is introduction of the Control Center which replaced the main menu in v7.5.  The Version 8 Control Center provides a more elegant and intuitive user interface.  Your company selections and menus appear in an easy-to-read tree structure and can be quickly navigated from the control center.

Version 8 allows you to customize the Control Center.  It supports drag-and-drop customization.  You can change the description, sequence within type (e.g. maintenance, processing), frequency, and risk of any task.  You can create new task groups for a company and drag-and-drop tasks from multiple modules/types.

In addition, Elliott Version 8 supports two customization levels.  The task customization can be at the company level, which applies to all users of a company, or at the user level, which applies to the individual user only.   Each task has its own screen and process.  In Version 8, you can change fonts and font sizes intuitively.  The fonts can be changed by selecting from a list of available fonts or by resizing the window or with a button to increase and decrease the size.

Elliott Version 8 highlights:

  • Elegant Control Center for navigation
  • New Report Viewer
  • New Drill Down to launch a new independent window
  • Improved printing and archiving (no more 99 spooled report limit)
  • Web based help for up-to-date content
  • Supports SMTP email to make email integration easy
  • Improved directory structure for better security and maintenance
  • And more

If you are interested in participating in the Elliott Version 8 beta release, let us know and we can help you install it on your system.  Again, running Elliott Version 8 has minimum risk.  Several sizable Elliott users have already converted to Elliott Version 8.  You can call us at 909-598-9019 or email us at sales@netcellent.com.

Pervasive PSQL 11 is a powerful database engine that tremendously improves database performance by utilizing the server’s multi-CPU capability.  The PSQL 11 64-bit engine significantly improves the relational database performance by allowing unlimited cache memory.  Even a Crystal Report that does not utilize the database index correctly can return the result instantly most of the time.  Netcellent recommends all our Elliott users upgrade to the PSQL 11 64-bit engine.

Many Elliott users and IT professionals may not be familiar with one license security issue when upgrading to PSQL 11.  During the installation, PSQL 11 will authorize the engine license code over the Internet or by phone.  The authorization process will record the hardware configuration, including motherboard details, hard drive serial number, network interface card (NIC) MAC address and the amount of memory.  Pervasive uses this copy protection to prevent the installation of PSQL 11 on more than one server.

Changes to your server hardware require you to first remove the license key for the PSQL 11 engine through the License Administrator.  Once the server is running with the new configuration, you can reauthorize the PSQL 11 engine utilizing the same key.  Failure to follow this procedure could invalidate your PSQL 11 license due to the copy protection scheme.  Even though this can be fixed, it requires a special procedure that takes time and effort and can not be resolved after business hours or over the weekend.  So, plan your PSQL server hardware upgrades carefully and don’t let it ruin your day.

If you have any questions regarding Elliott and PSQL v11, call us at 909-598-9019 or email us at support@netcellent.com.

The next major release of Elliott Business Software is Version 8.  Feedback from our Elliott users regarding Elliott 8 has been very positive.  Everyone was excited with the changes in this release.  They liked the look and feel of Elliott 8 and one commented, “It’s sophisticated, functional and simple to use.”  Many Elliott users are saying, “Elliott is headed in the right direction.”

Elliott 8 builds upon the powerful features of Version 7.5, but provides a more intuitive user interface.  The main menu, or control center, in Version 8 is elegant.  Your companies and menus appear in an easy-to-read tree structure and can be quickly navigated from the control center.  You can customize the control center by utilizing the Favorites function and adding task groups for each company.  The Version 8 installation improves the directory organization so it is easier for an administrator to set NTFS security to protect sensitive data.

Overall, Elliott 8 significantly improves printing capability and adds a new report viewer.  Printing a report to the screen will bring up the new report viewer.  Unlike Notepad, the report viewer is optimized for report viewing.  You can also directly print from the report viewer and the printed report will be properly formatted.  You can save the viewed reports to the Elliott Spooled Reports or email it.  Elliott 8 also offers improved spooled report printing and archiving functions.

Version 8 also provides enhanced drill down capabilities that launches independent windows in separate processes.  This is beneficial for side-by-side comparisons.  Elliott 8 now supports SMTP, which makes email integration much easier.  Version 8 uses web based help, which provides you with up-to-date topic contents.

Elliott 8 is currently in beta release and will be in general release soon.  Many Elliott users have been running Version 8 beta release.  Upgrading to Elliott 8 is “low risk” since it shares the same database with Version 7.5.  You can run both Version 8 and 7.5 side by side.

Elliott Version 8 highlights:

  • Elegant Control Center for Navigation
  • New Report Viewer
  • New Drill Down to Launch New Independent Windows

There has been much debate lately regarding Yahoo CEO Marisa Mayer’s ban on telecommuting, giving the impression she feels telecommuting is non-productive for the company.  News outlets reported Miss Mayer checked the VPN log for Yahoo’s telecommuters and found the activity to be low, which may have influenced her decision.  Recently, Best Buy joined Yahoo in banning telecommuting.  The decision to ban telecommuting may be viewed by many as counter progressive from a technology stand point.  We think these companies need to better manage their telecommuting resources instead of eliminating them.

Regardless of their reasons, the ban on telecommuting will definitely put Yahoo and Best Buy at a disadvantage when it comes to retaining and recruiting future talent.  Telecommuting is an accepted necessity and becoming a worldwide trend.  The benefit of working from home is an important factor when it comes to selecting and accepting a new job offer based on recent studies.  Furthermore, many studies show telecommuters are actually more productive when working from home than in the office.  Telecommuting provides employers and employees more flexibility, so companies can broaden their recruitment pool by reaching out to more remote talent.

Telecommuting works as long as the company establishes reasonable and quantifiable goals to manage the expectations of both employer and employee.  Fortunately, there are many productivity management solutions available to help address these issues.  NETcellent uses cloud based employee productivity measurement software called MySammy to quantifiably evaluate how effectively telecommuters utilize their computers during working hours.  MySammy is sophisticated and ahead of its time compared with using a VPN log to determine if employees are productive at home.  The solution has given us the flexibility to reach out to more remote IT talent, which we were not able to do in the past.  MySammy has also proven to be a valuable tool in determining the effectiveness and value of our telecommuters.  If you are interested in learning more about MySammy, visit the website at http://www.mysammy.com.
